Trends We’re Loving

Highlights from the Artisan Home Tour

By Megan Johansson, Contributor for Molly Howe Design

This month’s Artisan Home Tour took us on a whirlwind of inspiration. From black window frames to wallpaper and slab backsplashes, these trends are current heavy hitters in the design world (and we’re not at all mad about it).

So, let’s jump right in. Here are the 2018 Artisan Home Tour trends we’re loving:

Black Window Frames

Black window frames add an undeniable pop to any home – especially when paired with lighter, neutral wall colors. There’s something so bold, yet classic, about these frames, and they’re a reminder that windows are about more than just function. They can be absolutely striking in their own right.

White Interior Walls

The current color palette is definitely swaying more towards neutral tones, and white in particular is taking the spotlight, replacing the gray boom of the last few years. We’ve been predicting this switch since gray became the rage, and it’s no wonder when you think about how surprisingly versatile white can be. A slight shade tweak can pull in grey undertones, or warm up a room with a more beige or yellow hue. Regardless, white is the perfect base, allowing you to play with color pops in décor, hardware, and fixtures. (P.S. we’ve got a feeling that after the white, there’ll be a color explosion, so keep your eyes peeled for that!)

Graphic Tiles

Is there anything more stunning than a bold graphic tile? Opting for an unpredictable pattern can instantly add a splash of personality to the room, and these beauties can be used anywhere. Try adding a pattern to your bathroom, patio, or kitchen backsplash for a fresh new look.

Chevron and Herringbone Floors

There’s something so visually enticing about a good chevron floor – whether it’s in a traditional wood shade, or in an eye-catching sleek black tile - it’s an instant crowd pleaser. The pattern draws attention without being too showy, and the floor becomes a work of art in and of itself.

Wallpaper

It’s back! But this time, we’re not talking the scalloped flower borders of the early 2000s. What’s in right now is wallpaper that makes a statement but doesn’t cover every inch of a home. If it’s incorporated strategically, it can make a room feel like a coveted getaway you never want to leave.

Massive Hoods

Kitchen hoods definitely have the potential to up the wow factor in your home. After all, they’re the perfect combination of function and style if used well. This year’s contenders kept things simple, but were still stunning in their attention to curved details and larger-than-life sizes.

Floating Shelves

Whether in the kitchen, bathroom, or living room, floating shelves are all the rage. They’re less visually heavy than traditional entertainment centers or cabinets, and they provide ample opportunity to showcase beautiful dishware or a collection of well-styled photos, books, and tchotchkes.

Slab Backsplashes

An updated take on the typical tile versions, these slab backsplashes are to die for. There’s a certain beauty to the imperfections in the patterns, and the natural slab’s details give a sense of movement to the room. Plus, they’re incredibly easy to clean, so they’re great behind a stove! Whether mixed with a contrasting countertop or used in conjunction with the same countertop slab, these are definitely some of our new kitchen favorites.

French Ranges

Classic and a bit retro, French ranges immediately transport you to a cozy European cottage or a historic Parisian home. There’s really no better way to make a statement with your appliances than opting for one of these. Their details take center stage – from brass handles to bold blue color pops – and for anyone who’s a chef (and really, for anyone who’s not), ranges like these are a total dream.

Arches

Arches immediately add a feeling of warmth and welcome to a home. They soften up a room, and highlight a craftsmanship that is gorgeous in its simplicity. Needless to say, we’re totally on board with this trend.

Overall, we noticed that as trends shift to neutrals in color palettes, designs are simultaneously incorporating custom cabinetry details, arches, and unexpected flooring patterns to balance out the monochrome vibes. It’s the perfect blend of minimal and bold, and we can’t get enough.

So whether you’re enamored with graphic tiles, or in love with floating shelves, get ready to transform your home into that perfectly styled space you’ve always dreamed about. With details like these, it’ll certainly be hard to leave.
